Given the growing importance of smartphones, infotainment in vehicles is one of the major challenges automotive manufacturers are currently facing. Since smartphones have revolutionized the telecommunication industry, people have been storing almost all of their personal information on these devices. Conse- quently, synchronizing this data with the vehicle becomes inevitable. Contact de- tails and media data are of particular importance in this regard. The information is either stored on the smartphone, on a USB flash or in the cloud. In order to have access to the entire database at any time, the data has to be consolidated and synchronized in the infotainment system.
This project serves to develop an infotainment system that will meet the above- mentioned requirements. By means of a web-based runtime environment and a defined interface, data from various devices can be collected and used in the infotainment system. In addition, the user will be able to upgrade the system with widgets and customize it to personal needs.
The first part of the thesis focuses on a competitor analysis that compares diffe- rent car manufacturers in terms of their infotainment services. Moreover, project relevant operating systems are discussed. The main part describes both the func- tional and non-functional requirements of the infotainment system as well as the design of the system with regard to the backend, thereby defining the necessary interfaces to the vehicle.
